Hiking Schedule

Watch your email for additional spur-of-the-moment activities, especially in winter.



Thursday Evenings

Bike, Hike, or ski (in season) with the Akron Bicycle Club on Thursday evenings. Activities take place on the Ohio-Erie Canal Towpath and local roads in the CVNP. Everything goes whether rain or dry. Dinner afterward about 8:15 pm.

We always meet at 6:30 pm. From October through March, meet at Lock 29 in Peninsula. From April through September, meet at Deep Lock Quarry, ¾ miles south on Riverview Road.

Hike with the Akron Bicycle Club: click on the Ride Calendar button. Hikes are generally not posted until Friday.


Sunday Morning Hikes

Fall 2009—Spring 2010

Particulars:

  • Hikes leave at 9:00 am
  • They last 2–3 hours
  • Dress according to the weather: We hike in all types of weather. Trails can be muddy with creek crossings.
  • There is lunch after the hikes at local restaurants; sometimes we have pot-luck picnics. Check back here for changes.
  • This is a friendly group which enjoys meeting new people. If you're new, just show up and introduce yourself to others.
  • Children and dogs are welcome. Dogs on leashes, please.
  • Most hikes have two levels: A faster pace and a social pace. Trails or bushwhacking when able.
  • If you are a hike leader:
    • Notify Tony Z, Don May, or Lois N if you wish to make changes to your hike.
    • Changes to the starting point or date must be made at least two weeks before a scheduled hike.
    • Hike leader changes may be made at any time
    • If you cannot lead your scheduled hike, please find a substitute, or at least contact one of the persons above.

February 28: Penitentiary Glen (Lake Co.)

From I-90 take Exit 193 (SR-306). Follow SR 306 south to Kirtland-Chardon Road (at the foot of the hill) and turn left (southeast). Continue southeast on Kirtland-Chardon for two miles. The entrance for Penitentiary Glen Reservation is on the right.

March 7: Brecksville Reservation (Cuyahoga Co.)

Meet at the Station Road Bridge. From I-77 take exit 149A (SR-82 east). Follow SR-82 through Brecksville to just past the shopping center. Turn right at the park entrance on Chippewa Creek Drive. Take Chippewa Creek Drive through the park, cross Riverview Road into the Station Road Bridge parking area. From I-271 take exit 19 (SR-82) and turn right. Drive SR-82 to just past the Cuyahoga River Bridge (about 4.3 miles) and turn left onto Riverview Road. At the bottom of Riverview Road turn left into the Station Road Bridge parking area.

March 14: Whipp's Ledges (Medina Co.) Daylight Savings Time

Buzzard Sunday!! Meet at Top O’ Ledges picnic area. From I-271 south-bound, take the I-77 south-bound exit. From I-77 north or south take the Wheatley Road exit and head west (uphill). Cross Brecksville Road at the light onto Broadview Road which curves to the right. Go around the curve and turn left onto Hawkins and drive 2 miles (becomes Bellus Road). Turn left into Top O’ Ledges. Parking lot is way in the back.

March 21: Mentor Lagoon, (Lake Co.)

Meet in the parking lot. From Cleveland take either I-90 or SR-2 east to the SR-615/Center exit and head north. Follow Center which will turn into Hopkins. Continue north to SR-283 and jog right and go a short distance north and turn right on Harbor Drive. Follow Harbor to the parking lot. Check Directions

March 28: Ledges Hike (CVNP)

Potluck Game Day! Meet at the Ledges Shelter. From I-77 south take exit 143 (Wheatley Road) and turn left. Turn left again reentering I-77 north. Turn right onto I-271 north. Follow I-271 to exit 12 for SR-303. Turn right and follow SR-303 to Akron-Peninsula Road and turn right. Drive Akron-Peninsula Road to Truxell Road and turn left. Follow Truxell Road about 1.5 miles to the drive on the left. From I-271, take exit 12 for SR-303. Turn right and follow SR-303 to Akron-Peninsula Road and turn right. Drive Akron-Peninsula Road to Truxell Road and turn left. Follow Truxell Road about 1.5 miles to the drive on the left.

April 11: Lang's Run (CVNP)

Meet at the Wetmore trailhead. From I-77 south take exit 143 (Wheatley Road) and turn left. Follow Wheatley Road till it dead ends into Riverview Road and turn right. Turn left at the next street (Bolanz Road) and follow it to Akron-Peninsula Road. Turn left and follow A-P to Wetmore Road and turn right. Follow Wetmore Road to the parking area entrance on the left. From I-271, take exit 12 for SR-303. Turn right and follow SR 303 to Akron-Peninsula Road and turn right. Drive A-P 1.7 miles to Wetmore Road and turn left. Follow Wetmore Road to the parking area entrance on the left

April 17: Millionaire's Row Hike (Cuyahoga Co.) Saturday, 10:00am

Start at the Garfield Monument in Lakeview Cemetery. The Cemetery address is 12316 Euclid Ave., Cleveland; further directions can be found at the cemetery Website. Park along the road in the cemetery. This is a guided hike by Sandra, who is a tour guide at Lakeview Cemetery. She will be telling us about the history of some of the famous people who are buried at Lakeview, such as James A. Garfield, John D. Rockefeller, Eliot Ness, Garrett Augustus Morgan Sr., and Edwin Converse Higbee. Please email Linda W. if you would like to join the hike. We can go to Tommy's to eat or have a picnic at Lakeview. Please tell me what you would like to do about lunch.

April 18: Huntington Beach (Cuyahoga Co.)

Picnic after hike (weather permitting). Google maps with Lake Erie Nature and Science Ctr, 28728 Wolf Rd, Bay Village, OH, 44140. Take I-90 west to exit 159 (Columbia Rd/SR-252); north on Columbia to Wolf Rd; west on Wolf to sign (on right) for LENSC/ Huntington Reservation. Enter via Porter Creek Dr. Parking at LENSC, alternate parking and restrooms at Wolf Picnic Area, east of the center. Holly or Linda W. leading.

April 25: Hampton Hills (CVNP)

Poetry Hike. From I-271 South take exit SR-8 and head south. Exit at Steels Corners Rd. Go west on Steels Corners Rd. about 5 miles to Akron-Peninsula Rd. Turn south on Akron-Peninsula Rd. and go ¼ mile to the main park entrance on the left. Coming south on I-77, take exit 143 (Wheatley Rd.). Turn left on Wheatley Rd. and go down the hill into the Valley. The road turns into Everett Rd. Turn right at Riverview road. Turn left on Ira road. Turn right on Akron-Peninsula Road. The main park entrance is on the left. Gary leading.

May 1: Hog's Back Ridge (Lake Co.) Saturday, 10:00am

Lunch will be at local wineries. Meet at the Hog’s Back Ridge parking area. From Cleveland take I-90 east to SR-528 (exit 212), head south on SR-528 to Griswold Road turning left. Take Griswold to Emerson Road and turn left. Entrance is at the end of Emerson. xx leading.

May 9: The Gorge Park (Summit Co.)

(Mother's Day.) Take I-271 South to Route 8 exit. Go south on SR-8 to Broad Ave exit and turn right. At the first light turn left. This will be Front Street. Go past one traffic light. About a half mile past the light, the Gorge Metro Park entrance will be on the right.

May 16: Three Waterfalls Hike (CVNP)

Picnic after the hike, weather permitting. Start at Boston Store. Directions needed. Dana leading.

May 23: Holden Arboretum Hike (Lake Co.)

End of hiking season—picnic after hike! From Cleveland take I-90 east to Mentor (Kirtland Exit 193) and turn right on SR-306. Continue on SR-306 to the bottom of the hill and turn left on SR-615. At the first traffic light, turn right on Kirtland-Chardon Road. Travel 3.6 miles to Sperry Road and turn left. Travel 1.4 miles and turn left on the main drive to reach the Warren H. Corning Visitor Center. Cloyce leading.
