Hike ScheduleWatch your email for additional spur-of-the-moment activities, especially in winter. Thursday EveningsBike, Hike, or ski (in season) with the Akron Bicycle Club on Thursday evenings. Activities take place on the Ohio-Erie Canal Towpath and local roads in the CVNP. Everything goes whether rain or dry. Dinner afterward about 8:15 pm. All year round we meet at 6:30 pm, but the starting point switches twice a year. For the rest of 2011 and until about March 2012, we are meeting at Lock 29 in Peninsula. We will switch to Deep Lock Quarry, ¾ miles south on Riverview Road, in March. This lasts until November of 2012, when we switch back. January 29: Kendall Lake (CVNP)Meet at the Kendall Lake Shelter House. MAP. From I-77 south take exit 143 (Wheatley Road) and turn left. Turn left again reentering I-77 north. Turn right onto I-271 north. Follow I-271 to exit 12 for SR-303. Turn right and follow SR-303 to Akron-Peninsula Road and turn right. Drive Akron-Peninsula Road to Truxell Road and turn left. Follow Truxell Road about 1½ miles to the entrance on the right for Kendall Lake parking. From I-271, take Exit 12 for SR-303. Turn right and follow SR-303 to Akron-Peninsula Road and turn right. Drive Akron-Peninsula Road to Truxell Road and turn left. Follow Truxell Road about 1½ miles to the entrance on the right for Kendall Lake parking. February 5: Wetmore Trail (CVNP)Meet at the Wetmore trailhead. MAP. From I-77 south take exit 143 (Wheatley Road) and turn left. Follow Wheatley Road until it dead ends into Riverview Road and turn right. Turn left at the next street (Bolanz Road) and follow it to Akron-Peninsula Road. Turn left and follow A-P to Wetmore Road and turn right. Follow Wetmore Road to the parking area on the left. From I-271 north, take exit 12 for SR-303. Turn right and follow SR 303 to Akron-Peninsula Road and turn right. Drive A-P 1.7 miles to Wetmore Road and turn left. Follow Wetmore Road to the parking area entrance on the left. February 12: Perkins Run from Everett BridgeMeet at the Everett Road Covered Bridge. MAP. From I-77 south take Exit 143 (Wheatley Road) and turn left. Drive about 1.8 miles on Wheatley Road to the parking area entrance on the right just beyond the sharp left turn. From I-271 north, take exit 12 for SR-303. Drive east on SR-303 about 2 miles to Riverview Road and turn right. Follow Riverview Road 2.7 miles to Everett Road and turn right. The parking lot is on the left. February 19: Towner's Woods (Portage Co.)MAP. If snow bring XC skis, sleds, tubes, etc. for the sled hill after the hike. From the north use I-480 to SR-14 or SR-303 to Streetsboro intersection of (SR-303, 14, and 43). Go south (right) on SR-43. Go about 4 miles to Ravenna Rd. and turn east (left). Go about 2 miles on Ravenna to Towner's Woods. From the west use I-77 to I-80 east (turnpike) and exit at SR-14 Streetsboro and follow directions from north above. From the south use I-76 East to SR-43. Turn north (left) and travel 3 miles to Kent and follow SR-43 signs through Kent. About 2 miles north of Kent turn east (right) on Ravenna Rd. and go 2 miles to Towner's Woods. Christine and Bob leading. February 26: West Creek, the Grand Canyon of Parma ReplacedFebruary 26: Bedford Reservation (Cuyahoga Co.)Meet at Hermit's Hollow Picnic Area for a hike to Bridal Falls. We have historically started at Egbert Picnic Area, so this will mean we come to Bridal Falls from the opposite direction. Distance is 4-5 miles. Directions: From I-271, exit at Broadway Forbes Rds and take Broadway northwest for 2 miles. Turn left on Egbert Rd. (Metro Pkwy is to the right, Egbert to the left) for 2 miles. Turn right at tee onto Dunham Rd for 1 mile. Turn right onto Gorge Parkway for 1,000ft and park at Hermit's Hollow. From I-77, exit at Pleasant Valley Rd. and go east (becomes Alexander) for 4 miles. Turn left onto Dunham for 1.5 miles. Turn right into Gorge Parkway for 1,000ft and park at Hermit's Hollow. Eric leading. March 4: Sand Run Metropark (Summit Co.)MAP. N. Hawkins area of Sand Run Metropark, street address 798 N. Hawkins Ave. From W. Market St. in Akron, go north on Sand Run Rd. (right turn if going west, left if eastbound). Turn right on Wiltshire (at blinker), left on N. Hawkins (full signal), Hawkins dead ends at the parking lot. March 11: Lang's Run (CVNP)Meet at the Wetmore trailhead. MAP. From I-77 south take exit 143 (Wheatley Road) and turn left. Follow Wheatley Road until it dead ends into Riverview Road and turn right. Turn left at the next street (Bolanz Road) and follow it to Akron-Peninsula Road. Turn left and follow A-P to Wetmore Road and turn right. Follow Wetmore Road to the parking area on the left. From I-271, take exit 12 for SR-303. Turn toward Peninsula following SR 303 to Akron-Peninsula Road and turn right. Drive A-P 1.7 miles to Wetmore Road and turn left. Follow Wetmore Road to the parking area entrance on the left March 18: Buzzard Hike (Start at Hinkley Lake)From I-271 south-bound, take the I-77 south-bound exit. From I-77 north or south take the Wheatley Road exit and head west (uphill). Cross Brecksville Road at the light onto Broadview Road which curves to the right. Go around the curve and turn left onto Hawkins and drive 2 miles (becomes Bellus Road). Cross State Rd, at bottom of hill turn left onto East Drive. Make an immediate right into the parking lot. March 25: Deep Lock Quarry to Horseshoe Pond (CVNP)Meet at Deep Lock Quarry. From I-77 south take exit 143 (Wheatley Road) and turn left. Turn left again re-entering I-77 north. Turn right onto I-271 north. Follow I-271 to exit 12 for SR-303. Turn right and follow SR-303 about 2.2 miles to Riverview Rd. Turn right and go about ½ mile and turn left into parking lot. From I-271 take exit 12 for SR-303. Turn toward Peninsula following SR-303 about 2.2 miles to Riverview Rd. Turn right and drive ½ mile and turn left into parking lot. April 1: Waterfall Hike (CVNP)Pack a lunch to eat on the hike! Meet at the new Brandywine Falls parking area. From I-77 take exit 147 (Miller Road) and turn left. Follow Miller to Brecksville Rd. (SR-21) and turn right. Take Brecksville to Snowville Road (the next light) and turn left. Drive to the end of Snowville Road and turn left onto Riverview Road. At the next stop sign turn right onto Vaughn Road. Follow Vaughn Road (becomes Highland Rd) about 1.8 miles and turn right onto Brandywine Road. Follow Brandywine Road to the new parking lot on the right. From I-271 exit to SR-8 south to E. Hines Hills Road and turn right. Follow E. Hines Hills Road to Olde 8 Rd. and turn right. Exit at Steels Corners Rd. and go west on Steels Corners Rd. about 5 miles to Akron-Peninsula Rd. Turn left on Akron-Peninsula Rd. and go ¼ mile to the main park entrance on the left. Coming south on I-77, take exit 143 (Wheatley Rd.). Turn left on Wheatley Rd. and go down the hill to where it ends at Riverview Rd. Turn right then make a quick left onto Bolanz. Turn right onto Akron-Peninsula Road and go just past Steels Corners Rd. The main park entrance is on the left. Gary leading. April 22: Mill Stream Run (Cuyahoga Co.)Meet at the parking area. MAP. From I-71 take exit SR-82 in Strongsville. Travel east on SR-82 to Valley Pkwy and turn right. Follow Valley Pkwy. a short distance to Royalview Lane and turn right. The parking lot is at the very end of Royalview Lane. April 29: Gorge Metro Park (Summit Co.)Take I-271 South to Route 8 exit. Go south on SR-8 to the Broad Ave exit and turn right. At the first light turn left. This will be Front Street. Pass one traffic light and go another half mile to the Gorge Metro Park entrance on the right. From Cleveland take I-90 east to Mentor (Kirtland Exit 193) and turn right on SR-306. Continue on SR-306 to the bottom of the hill and turn left on SR-615. At the first traffic light, turn right on Kirtland-Chardon Road. Travel 3.6 miles to Sperry Road and turn left. Travel 1.4 miles and turn left on the main drive to reach the Warren H.
